About Us
Koinonia Congregation is an actual congregation meeting in an online space – a virtual reality world known as “Second Life.” Koinonia has been a vibrant faith community serving Second Life for over three years. Koinonia uses the cutting-edge technology of Second Life to create a safe environment where people can learn about the Christian faith and experience a loving Christian community.
Opening its doors and its heart to people of various theologies, sexual orientations, and faith experiences, Koinonia practices God’s extravagant welcome for all. Koinonia Christians celebrate the abundance of life and welcome the diversity of God’s people.
The world-wide reach of Second Life gives Koinonia unlimited potential to reach people who would never walk into the doors of a brick and mortar church. It also provides a safe place for those who have been hurt or rejected by their communities of faith.
We at Koinonia seek to offer a safe space in which people from around the world can participate in a community of ecumenical faith that represents liberal protestant values where ALL are valued as sacred children of God. With a social gospel ethic and liberation theology, combined with a feminist pedagogy, we seek to extend God’s extragent welcome to all who seek.
Our pastoral team offers individuals the opportunity to explore questions and experience the fellowship of seekers and the faithful as well as compassionate, knowledgeable facilitators. Scholars and religious leaders representing open and affirming traditions are able to interact with people in both structured online learning opportunities as well as casual fellowship.
It is the ultimate goal of our community to extend God’s radical hospitality and allow people to experience a welcoming Christian community online (perhaps for the first time in their lives) where their sacred worth is honored.
